Summer Project

This mind map explores all the different words that I connected back to the theme western and what I first of did was play some word association and started coming up with words that I felt linked back to it and what I first found was I linked it back to stereotypical cowboy movies and that was the association I had with the word so I began to look through images of old western towns and village’s and also movies to gain some inspiration and insight into the theme Western and what I found was it can be used as a stepping stone to many different scenes and settings

This is a collection of classic western guns that I produced based upon my mind map of the words that I associated with western and a very common theme throughout all of the weaponry is blend of metal gun with a wooden handle and this can be seen on most of the revolvers and all of the rifles and I like the contrast it brings to the guns as the light colour of the wood draws your attention, Theses images will certainly be useful to me for reference when creating any game weapon game assets as well as any 3D models I may create in the future

Here I have a moodboard of jail houses and whats interesting about these is they are all very dark, dim lit and quite dingy which gives off a vibe that its not a good place. They all seem to be made of some kind of dark wood or concrete and seem slightly rundown, I quite like the ascetic of the jail house being solely made of wood as it gives it a very rustic almost worn feel and I can see myself maybe basing some level design off of the setting that this moodboard provides as well as some good reference for assets and models

This is a more environmental moodboard which conveys more of the western environment and climate and as you can see from the images the landscapes are mostly flat with a few noticeable rocky peaks and the lands colours are a wash of oranges and yellows which make the land look very dry and this is only heightened by the fact the sky’s are bright vibrant blues that really cause the oranges of the land to clash and stand out I can se myself using these images as colour pallets for any background art I produce and just as reference for creating background landscapes

This is a collection of railroad and train images and again this moodboard is based on the mindmap above but what I came to find when sourcing these images was they are all set in very flat open landscapes and have a similar colour pallet to the great plains moodboard I created earlier, the trains themselves are very robust and mainly coloured in blacks which makes them stickout form the backgrounds they are in I think I will uses these images as reference for creating 3D models of the trains and for texturing

I created this moodboard based around the idea of wild west towns and as a result of the time period most if not all of the architecture is wooden and all in shades of brown even the sand on the ground has a similar colouring causing everything to seem a little bland and making the buildings almost fade into the background, I will use these images for reference during level design but I think I will change the colour pallet to something that will be slightly more vibrant and appealing without taking from the feeling of it being an old western town

Finally this moodboard is specifically focused on saloons and as with the town the architecture is primarily wooden but what sets it apart is the interior which is filled with some quite bright wood colours and all the different shades of greens and blues of the glasses and bottles and I like the golden metal trim along the bottom of the bar, one thing a lot of these have in common is the swinging saloon door which has almost become a staple and what you come to expect when you thing of a saloon. Overall I’m not a big fan of the outside colour scheme of the buildings but the interiors I like a lot and can see me using these images as again reference for level design
